WHO CAN APPLY?

All non-EU citizens who are married or in long-term exclusive relationships with EU citizens can apply for a residence permit to settle in the Netherlands.
Who else can apply?
The partner residence permit procedure is also open to non-EU citizens who are married or in long-term exclusive relationships with citizens of Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein or Norway.

THE EU PARTNER PROCEDURE

Are you an EU citizen planning to live in the Netherlands with a partner from outside the EU? Or have you already settled here and want to bring your non-EU partner or spouse to the Netherlands? In both cases, your partner or spouse needs a specific residence permit issued by the Dutch immigration service.

The procedure to get this residence permit is commenly, also known as the EU settlement scheme or EU partner procedure. Once your permit has been granted, you are allowed to live together with your family and work in the Netherlands under EU law. The purpose of this law is to protect the family way of life of EU nationals.

WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS?

Find out if you and your partner are eligible for an EU partner permit so you can both live and work in the Netherlands

• Both of you must be 21 or older

• You are from the EU/EEA or Switzerland

• You are living in the Netherlands or planning to live in the Netherlands

• Your partner or spouse (registered or unregistered) is a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen

• Married or in a civil partnership? As unmarried partners you can apply too if you are able to prove that both of you are in an exclusive, long-term relationship

• Your spouse or registered partner must prove that he or she is able to support you financially for at least one year from the start of your application

Frequently Asked Questions

No, unmarried partners can also apply; proof of the relationship will be required.

You and your partner must apply in person so you both have to be in the Netherlands.

EU citizens are nationals from countries within the European Union, however, citizens of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein are also eligible under this scheme.

Generally speaking, Dutch nationals are subject to a different procedure to bring their non-EU partner to the Netherlands.

The application currently costs €57. If the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) turns down your application, no refund is given.

The time required for the preparation of the application and the necessary documentation is highly dependent on your country of origin. Once the application has been submitted, the IND can take up to six months to make their decision.
